Hybrid Flicker and Thayer’s Gull, Washington Co (early November)

It was a week of hybrids … One Yellow-shafted x Red-shafted Northern Flicker showed itself well at Emma Jones Nature Preserve in Hillsboro on 11/01. The nice red V on the nape, yellow underwings are characteristics of Yellow-shafted. The red & black malar clearly shows that the bird is a hybrid as Red-shafted should have a red and Yellow-shafted a black malar. The face is more gray than brown, pointing to Red-shafted.

At Valley Memorial Cemetary and Park, TWO hybrid American x Eurasian Widgeon were seen on 11/02. The ducks were were very antsy that day, so pictures could not be obtained.

Finally, a 1st winter Thayer’s Gull was at Fernhill on 11/4 just before sunset.
