Paradise White-tailed Ptarmigan (Mt. Rainier, WA, 7/27/13)

Khanh Tran and I went looking for White-tailed Ptarmigan out of Paradise yesterday morning. If you can locate them, these birds are amazingly tame and will come to you, as close as 5ft in many instances. The young are particularly bold, but also really hard to get good pictures of as they are always on the move,

We greatly enjoyed seeing this female with her 4 chicks. The young are maybe just over a week to 10 days old.

Also right along the trail about 0.5mi uphill from the Golden Gate Trail t’s into the Skyline trail was this pair. The white bird looks to be the female, so this pair might not be breeding this year.

Obsessed with birding, I started taking a pictures in '01 after a brief personalized intro by the incomparable David LaPuma. In July '09, I acquired a Canon EOS 50D with a 100-400mm IS lens to be able to shoot the fast-moving lbjs that were so difficult before. In Dec '14, I upgraded my body to a Canon 7D Mark II and immediately noticed a big improvement. Nevertheless, I'm first and foremost a birder, then a photographer.
